That’s the question today from my handy little “Q & A a Day” book. I’ve paraphrased it a bit. The actual question is this:
Does anything hurt today?
I’m blessed that I can give a simple answer to the question. No, nothing hurts. I did sleep a bit later than usual (almost 5:00 AM) but then jumped out of bed, headed for the kitchen, made delicious fruit smoothies — strawberries, peaches, and bananas — then whipped up a batch of pancakes for our breakfast. I’m happy, healthy, and looking forward to a beautiful day. Nothing hurts.
That’s the simple answer. But since when has life ever been simple?
Some hurts are physical, others are emotional. And then there’s the matter of empathy — our ability to understand and share the feelings of others. When someone we love hurts, we hurt. When we see people who are suffering, we suffer, too. It’s a huge part of what makes us human.
So, does anything hurt today? Sadly, I must say “Yes, so many things hurt.”
It hurts that so many people are sick.
It hurts that so many people are homeless.
It hurts to think of all the children who go to bed hungry.
It hurts to imagine those who suffer from domestic abuse.
How painful to acknowledge the prejudice, hatred, and anger that exist in our world.
What Can We Do?
We can pray. We can support organizations that help the homeless and feed the hungry. We can do our part to promote tolerance, love, and truth.
Give thought today to those who are hurting.
